A Rough Recipe for the Energy Balance of Quasi-Steady Internal Lee Waves
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent fineand microstructure observations indicate enhanced finescale shear and strain in conjunction with bottom intensified turbulent dissipation above regions of rough bathymetry. Such observations implicate the bottom boundary as an energy source for the finescale internal wavefield. They also pose a question. Can the vertical profile of turbulent dissipation be predicted from a model of wave generation which serves as input to a model describing how internal wave energy is transferred to dissipation scales as waves propagate away from their source region? This paper attempts to address that question in the context of quasi-steady lee wave generation and dissipation.

Effects of Small-scale Bathymetric Roughness on the Global Internal Wave Field
The small-scale roughness properties of the seafloor are increasingly being recognized as critical parameters in determining important processes in physical oceanography. For instance, in situ observations (e.g., Polzin et al., 1997) find that mixing levels are greatly elevated in regions of rough topography. Gille et al. (2000) demonstrate that mesoscale eddy energy tends to be lower in areas ...
متن کاملA Mathematical Model for Analysis of Upright Perforated Wave Absorbers
On the basis of the continuity equation and the Bernoulli equation in the steady form, a differential equation is developed to evaluate the successive water levels within compartments of an upright perforated wave absorber. Then the initial and boundary conditions are introduced and the differential equation is solved as an initial value problem. Finally the reflection coefficient from the wave...

Energy balance method is an effective and simple method which is used in the amplitude calculation of Aeolian vibration in transmission lines with Stockbridge damper. In this study, by considering an appropriate model for the conductor vibration, a comprehensive m...
متن کاملEffects of Valve Closing Law and Unsteady Friction Model on Damping Pressure Waves in a Network
Water-hammer is a transient condition which may occur in a network as a result of rapid or slow valve closures, pump failures, changes in turbine loading, etc. It creates high and low pressure waves which travel along the system and decay as a result of wall shear stress. Comparison o experimental and theoretical results revealed the failure of steady or quasi-steady models in correctly predict...
